Vienna University of Economics and Business Administration, Austria

The Vienna University of Economics and Business Administration offers a top-notch education in the
fields of business, commerce, economics and business education. The university is a leading adaptor
of knowledge sharing technologies in Austria, running academic portals such as EducaNext or
Learn@WU, which connects more than 30.000 users, holds currently more than 40.000 learning
objects, and shows usage frequencies similar to Austria’s major newspaper sites. The platforms have
been developed by the Institute for Information Systems and New Media. The research areas of the

Institute for Information Systems and New media emphasize two major areas: New Media, in
particular Computational Media, Active Media, Polymorphic Media, and Information Systems, in
particular highly flexible Systems and Application Engineering with the main focus on technologyenhanced
learning and information retrieval. With the available resources internationally outstanding
performance in research and teaching has been achieved, needed by society and providing personal
satisfaction for students and university teachers. The institute is involved in various standardisation
activities such as the simple query interface (SQI), a retrieval interface for learning object repositories,
and the IEEE study group competencies. The institute’s own spin-off company knowledge markets
provides potential for commercialisation to industry. The institute has been and is a partner in various
other IST projects such as Prolearn, Prolix, iCamp, Elena, and Universal.
Following their experience in building and implementing large scale e-learning portals WUW will
have the lead in WP2 infrastructure. Moreover, based on their extensive experience with LSA, WUW
will give an important contribution to WP4 and in particular WP5.
